The Writers’ Nook is a place where we, as a group, can provide a safe and positive environment in which to encourage one another and hone our own writing skills.
Emotional Distance
When you are reading a good story and find yourself emotionally close to the protagonist; do you ever wonder how the author did that? In creative writing, how involved the reader feels with a story can strengthen the clarity, pacing, suspense and drama of a story or alternatively draw a reader out of a scene that is critical to understanding a narrative.
Please bring a notebook and pen or pencil with you, and if you can, bring a printed copy of the Handout to read and discuss at the meeting. Contact me if you need a password.
The Challenge
Between now and our next meeting on April 28th, pay attention to what you are reading. Remind yourself to take note of where in these stories or books do you feel a close Emotional Distance to any of the characters, or the scenes in the book. The Challenge is for you to recognize whether or not you are feeling a close, or distant, Emotional Distance; and then try to discover what the author did in the story to make you feel this; in other words how did the author achieve this level of Psychic Distance in your mind?
Before this meeting closes, we need somebody to volunteer to bring a Writing Prompt to the next meeting to start it off on the right note.
