A Shuswap Nature Hiker

We are Shuswap Nature Hikers. We walk with others on Fridays for camaraderie and safety, and YOU are always welcome to join us! If you have questions, feel free to contact me any time. Are you interested in hiking with us on a regular basis? If you would like an email each week to tell you where we are going, let me know.

Hiking on Friday April 25th!

I have heard back from so many of you that I can hardly wait to get out there and hike. But what surprised me was that everybody said they, couldn’t come this week!

So I’ve decided that we will not do this hike, this week. Oh, I’m still going to go hiking on Friday and if you would like to join me, I’ll meet you at Shuswap Lake Estates Parking lot at 1:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

But the special Commemorative Hike for Janice we will postpone until another time, a little later in the spring when more people are here, and more people can come.

If you are planning to join me this Friday, April 25th, just let me know. I think we should hike in the Highlands!

Hiking on another Friday, maybe in May!

Do you remember when our group started hiking? It was 2005, the year after my husband and I moved to the Shuswap. We started fairly slowly, I didn’t always have company to walk with and I was too frightened to go alone, but there were two women who came with me almost every Friday. I came to count on them. I knew they would always be there and gradually more and more others started to join us. Do you remember who they were?

Their names were Myrt Lamb and Janice Cambruzzi. And now, you many have heard, Janice Cambruzzi passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on January 2nd. We are going to honour her memory with a Commemorative Hike on Friday, April 25th. I hope you will come join us!

Last Spring I remember when we hiked the relatively new trail at Skimikin. Oh, how Janice wished she could hike it with us but her knee was so bad; she just couldn’t. I promised her I’d take her there when it felt better but then my knee went; we never got there. So we’re going to hike it this Friday.

To accommodate hikers who used to hike with us back then and would like to join us but don’t hike very much anymore, we will begin with a picnic lunch at noon and a chat before we begin the hike. I’m thinking about you, Myrt; and a few of our other hikers who don’t come out anymore! So everybody bring folding chairs, bring a few extra too. Bring a picnic lunch.

We’ll meet at Shuswap Lake Estates Lower Level parking lot at 11:00 am to get ourselves organized here and then go from there. This parking lot is positioned off of Golf Course Drive, across the street from Blind Bay Marketplace and Centennial Drive. If you have trouble finding the meeting place, just stop beside the restaurant at the end of the strip-mall, beside what is now called Timber Shuswap, and look across the road, and up↑.

Please remember that it is a privilege to park here and that we’ve promised them that we will park at the very back of the parking lot, beyond the lines that mark the regular parking lot.

If you prefer to drive there yourself and meet us in the parking lot, let me know ahead of time. We’d meet you in the parking lot at the Skimikin Lake Recreation Site at about 11:30. See Skimikin Lake Recreation Site.

This is a campground operated by the equestrian club and all Off-Highway Vehicle use is restricted to main roads for commuting to and from the Recreation Site only. Idle in and out 20km/hr. Dogs must be under control at all times; this is particularly important because this is a horse & rider campground; we cannot have our dogs scaring the horses.

When you pull into the parking lot, park on the left hand side. Here, there’s a little trail there that leads you straight in to the end of the lake where we plan to have our lunch. If you brought folding chairs, we’ll bring them round through the campground to get to the far left end of the campground where we will picnic before we hike.

Got any questions? Feel free to contact me. You will probably be back home well before dinner time.

Note: It’s important to understand that we hike as individuals who walk together on Fridays for camaraderie and safety. We are not affiliated with any organization; we’re just a group of people. Remember to put your name, a special somebody’s contact information, your Doctor’s name, your allergies or any other pertinent information onto a card-like piece of paper. Zip it into a little plastic bag and carry it in your backpack, or pocket... just in case
