The Writers’ Nook is a place where we, as a group, can provide a safe and positive environment in which to encourage one another and hone our own writing skills.
Chechov’s Gun
Chechov’s Gun is a dramatic principle used in drama, literature, and other narrative forms asserting that every element that is introduced into a story should be necessary to the plot; or leave it out. It can be split into two parts: the setup and the payoff which arrives later.
Please bring a notebook and pen or pencil with you to the meeting, and if you can, bring a printed copy of the Handout to read and discuss at the meeting. Contact me if you need a password.
The Challenge
Your challenge after this meeting is over and before our next meeting on October 13th (following Thanksgiving) will be to write a short story. See if you can work a Chekov’s Gun into it. If you send it to me we’ll post it onto our site, if you allow that, and we’ll see what comments the rest of our members make.
